By virtue of interpreting (rather than playing into) the transference, the analyst becomes a safe and logical receptacle for further projections. e. one unable to disentangle itself convincingly enough from the patient’s phantasies). Interpretation fosters and promotes projection, and projection in turn allows interpretation to have a more-than-academic interest. This attitude of realism on the part of the analyst is not at all the same as emotional detachment; on the contrary, the analyst cannot afford emotional detachment (despite Freud’s comparison of the analyst to a surgeon).

In this view, providing the patient with anything else, such as love, advice, guidance, or support for his self-esteem is the analyst’s acting—in his countertransference, and represents his resistance to analysis. This is not, of course, to suggest that the analyst should be free of countertransference, which would be like saying that the patient should be free of resistance. Even if this were possible, it would be antithetical to the interests of the analysis. Resistance is a valuable indicator that we are nearing an important unconscious phantasy, and we would be lost without it.

But while suggestion has a place, it also has a price, and this price is exacted on both therapist and patient. The practitioner of suggestion must maintain himself as an idealized good object. This means he must maintain a split in the patient’s mind between himself as a good object and himself as a bad object. Maintaining this split means behaving in a way that is consistent with the role of good object into which he hopes to be cast. It also means avoiding behavior that would qualify him as a bad object.
